Featuring Ginni Hogarth
The future looks good for young singer/songwriter Drew Black. His first album ’somewhere in amongst the rest’ which was liberally distributed around the UK, free of charge to the public. His emotionally driven songs about lost love and an endless search for peace allow you to see through his eyes and feel his rawest of emotions as if he was stripped down to nothing more than a voice bellowing in the distance. Varying from song to song Drew can manipulate his voice to convey everything that was felt when the song was first scribed. One second he can throw his voice with such ferocity and power it’s a surprise he needs a PA then to suddenly switch style and portray the ramblings of a broken man with nothing but love in his heart. Drews range covers so much more and he has that rare ability of taking someone else’s song and making it his own without losing any of the original impact. He truly is one of the most versatile young artists around at the moment. Any opportunity to see him should be snapped up.

Next up we had Cutaways with – Weapon Of Choice, Cutaways are a synth-driven indie-pop trio from Belfast. In 2008, Cutaways released the Start Stop! Start Stop! EP, receiving airplay from Colin Murray on national Radio 1 and rave reviews from the likes of Artrocker magazine. Cutaways took their vibrant live show all across Ireland, as well as London, Glasgow and Liverpool with the gigs featuring anything from impromptu puppet shows to ‘rap’ cameos. The band’s puppet counterparts also starred in the video for Lovers Are Lunatics; and Blue Bird, Yellow Bird and Red Bird from the EP’s artwork sprung to life terrorizing the streets of Belfast in the video for I Don’t Understand What You Don’t Say.
Cutaways also recorded a BBC Radio 1 session, and the band finished the year playing to a ‘capacity’ crowd in a one-bedroom flat on New Years Eve.
2009 promises to be a colourful year, with Ireland’s Hot Press and AU magazines both naming Cutaways as one of the bands to watch in the coming year; while in March the band made their first TV appearance on regional ITV1’s UTV Live at The Limelight.
Their 11-track debut album Earth and Earthly Things is a superb introduction to the delirious and dizzying world of Cutaways; merging infectious indie pop-rock with pounding synth soundscapes and boy/girl harmonies.
This week we also have an exclusive interview with Ginni Hogarth, before she plays at the UK Live and Unsigned finals on SUNDAY 10th MAY at THE PRINCES THEATRE – Princes Way – Aldershot.
Previous winner of “BBC Song of the Year” Competition, singer-songwriter and performer, Ginni, is a powerful talent not to be ignored. As an accomplished pianist, cellist and self-taught guitarist, Ginni has become very versatile in her song writing and performance. She is a vibrant performer with a captivating affect on her audience.
After a successful career in Musical Theatre/TV in South Africa gaining national press and TV coverage, Ginni moved to the UK to pursue her vocation as a singer/songwriter and pianist. With many challenges and without a piano to hand, she took to teaching herself to play the guitar. This opened a whole new approach to song-writing and allowed her to expand in her performance.
Ginni has performed at various venues around the UK, as well as Amsterdam, California and South Africa. Her self-financed debut solo album ‘between these walls’ was released in June 2001 and she toured and promoted this album in the UK solo and with her band. This tour included venues such as The Kings Head – Fulham; The Halfmoon – Putney; Break for the Border – Oxford Circus and many more nationwide. This album sold just over 2500 copies at gigs alone. Read REVIEW.
In July 2004, Ginni released her 2nd album ’sweetest dream’ , which became a limited edition album due to her signing to Madam Music, an independent label in September that same year.
This deal led to her recording her 3rd album ‘GINNI’ at London’s Westside Studios in collaboration with producer James Hallawell. Ginni’s single ‘Jump the Sky’ appeared on the ‘British at Midem’ sampler cd, alongside music from artists such as Nizlope, Goldie Lookin Chain and the Delays.
